Pre-Amp Boost

The Razorbeak is a one knob preamp boost pedal inspired by the Earthquaker Devices Arrows pedal. It uses npn transistor technology to boost your mids and lower highs without getting too glassy. Your clean tone will sparkle with extra sustain, your lead lines will be crisper and more harmonic, and your low end will be tighter.  When cranked it’ll slam your amp, or dirt pedals, with a juggernaut of extra gain, and when rolled back it’ll cut your signal all the way back to silence if you so wish.

Settings ideas

5 o’clock – “Mega Boost”: Maximum boost of gain. Tip your tube amp into overdrive, smash your low gain overdrive pedals into crazy land, or blow everyone’s eardrums to confetti. You do you.

7 o’clock – “Sound of Silence”: Maximum cut of gain. Here, your signal is reduced to nearly zero. You can use this setting to make the Razorbeak act as an on / off pedal in your chain.

10 ish – “Sparkles”: Unity gain sits around here and is where you’ll find the sweet spot. Find unity and place it at the front of your chain for an always-on tone cleaner. You’ll stand out better in a band mix, your tone will be brighter, your notes will be crisper, your sustain will be longer, and the mud in your low end will be excavated. Sit it after your dirt pedals and it’ll tighten and refine your filth. It’s the “make everything betterer” setting.

Bit after 10 ish – “Look at me!”: Wherever you find unity on your Razorbeak, nudge it a bit further, and then slam it on when you want your lead lines and solos to be the centre of attention. As well as all that extra polish on your tone, the jump in volume will lift your sound above the racket when you need it to. Stretching out a leg to place your foot on a monitor while you shred is entirely optional.

Testimonials

I hope the mic picks up just how good this pedal sounds!
— Conrad Keely - …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (USA)
Special secret guitar sauce! It really does focus the tone in a great way, especially for recording.
— Timmy Smallman - “_guitar_dad” (Australia)
It was easy to get to grips with which is great for a caveman like me, and if I was playing more regularly again, it would be a staple to my board for sure. I’ve always used a quite stripped back board - tuner, boost, dist, reverb, that’s about it, maybe a looper/delay for a couple of songs. So it would sit at home with me for sure. Really solidly built too.
— Tom Morris - Her Name Is Calla (UK)
I like keep my pedal setup simple and let the amp do the talking, and the Razorbeak makes that a whole lot easier. So much so I’ve retired my trusty Boss SD-1.
— Duncan Muggleton - Weird Elements / Jimmy Two Eyes / The Sneaks / Nervous Dog (UK)
The Razorbeak pedal works best for me as a needs must boost as opposed to always on & it serves its purpose very well. It’s placed after my tuner/drop/noise suppressor pedals & before any distortions. Being in a 3 piece I us it for dynamics/clarity/stand-out purposes when the guitar isn’t in use during a track. I tend to keep the dial slightly passed unity gain.
— Jaimie Marlow - A Volcano / Logfox / Tenancity? / Fishcake (UK)
This is truly excellent. I thought it was gonna be great for when I want to go up a notch when I’m already heavy (which it really is), but now I realise how much I’m gonna use it to boost the clean sound at choice moments, turns out that’s the thing I’ve always wanted without me really ever knowing it! So many other possibilities too. Fucking class!
— Richard Springthorpe - Superworst / Logfox / Tenacity? / Fishcake (UK)
It’s well nice.
— Ben Bugby – Superworst (UK)
Clear & crisp.
